Frame and roof material is the first line of a spec sheet, and the one buyers skip. In the models we list, you see aluminum frames, steel frames and mixed aluminum-and-steel frames, usually topped with louvers of aluminum or a roof of galvanized steel. Each choice affects rust, weight and price.
How each metal handles weather
Aluminum forms a thin protective oxide film when exposed to air, which resists oxygen and water. The same source notes the film does not protect against everything: aluminum is attacked by dissolved chlorides such as salt, so a coastal yard is a harder test. It is also about one-third the density of steel, but not as strong or stiff.
Bare steel rusts, so outdoor steel is coated. Galvanizing puts a zinc layer on steel that works as a barrier and as a sacrificial anode, so zinc corrodes first and protects the steel even where the coating has small gaps. Many roofs here are galvanized steel. Paint over the zinc is a second layer of defence.
In short: aluminum is light and does not red-rust. Galvanized steel is heavy and strong, and its life depends on keeping the zinc and paint intact, especially at screw holes and cut edges.
What the data shows
How the listed models combine frame and roof, as of November 8, 2026:
| Frame | Roof | Models | Brands | Price range | Wind rating range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | Aluminum louvers | 21 | Kozyard, Mirador Outdoor, Paragon Outdoor, Purple Leaf | $1,679.98 to $6,999 | 65-102 mph |
| Aluminum | Aluminum panels | 2 | Paragon Outdoor | $1,679.99 to $1,999.99 | 65-65 mph |
| Aluminum | Galvanized steel | 8 | Domi Outdoor Living, Paragon Outdoor, Sunjoy | $649.99 to $3,149.99 | 40-73 mph |
| Aluminum | not stated | 5 | Mirador Outdoor, Paragon Outdoor | $2,399 to $7,499 | 49-102 mph |
| Aluminum + steel | Galvanized steel | 9 | Domi Outdoor Living, Mirador Outdoor | $1,045.99 to $5,999 | 72-90.2 mph |
| Aluminum + steel | Polycarbonate | 1 | Sunjoy | $822.25 to $822.25 | 50-50 mph |
| Steel | Galvanized steel | 4 | Mirador Outdoor, Sunjoy | $1,399.96 to $2,099 | 50-78.5 mph |
Three things stand out. Aluminum frames dominate, 36 of the 50 models. Louvered pergolas with aluminum louvers are the premium end, reaching $6,999 and 102 mph. And all-steel frames are rare: four models, none rated above 78.5 mph.
The steel and mixed-frame models
| Model | Frame | Roof | Price | Weight | Wind | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mirador Outdoor 80S Steel Pergola 10' x 12' | Steel | Galvanized steel | $1,799 | 334 lb | 78.5 mph | 2 yr |
| Mirador Outdoor 80S Steel Pergola 10' x 20' | Steel | Galvanized steel | $2,099 | 562 lb | 78.5 mph | 2 yr |
| Sunjoy Cedarville Steel Hardtop Gazebo with Skylight 11' x 13' | Steel | Galvanized steel | $1,399.96 | 412.26 lb | 50 mph | not stated |
| Sunjoy Meridian Woodgrain Tall Metal Gazebo with Netting 13' x 15' | Steel | Galvanized steel | $1,596.54 | 540.13 lb | 50 mph | not stated |
| Domi Outdoor Living Metal Louvered Pergola 10' x 10' | Aluminum + steel | Galvanized steel | $1,045.99 | 236.9 lb | 72 mph | 5 yr |
The Mirador 80S is the only steel louvered pergola at $1,799 for 10' x 12', with 78.5 mph wind and a 2 year warranty. Sunjoy's steel gazebos state only a total roof load of 3,400 lb and a 50 mph wind rating. Domi's metal pergola uses aluminum plus steel, a $1,045.99 entry price, and a 5 year warranty.
Weight is a trade. The steel Mirador 80S 10' x 12' weighs 334 lb, while the Paragon Lugano aluminum 10' x 12' weighs 327.6 lb, so frame material alone does not decide weight. Louver thickness, post size and roof panels matter as much. Check the listed weight when you plan delivery and anchoring.
Which should you choose
- Coastal or salt exposure: choose aluminum louvers and inspect any steel for the coating. Aluminum is vulnerable to chlorides, and steel is only as good as its zinc and paint.
- Tight budget: galvanized steel hardtops and Domi's mixed frames are cheapest. The Domi wall-mounted 10' x 12' gazebo costs $649.99.
- Highest wind: the 102 mph models are all aluminum Mirador pergolas. See snow load and wind ratings.
- Low maintenance: aluminum avoids the annual repainting that wood needs, a point the pergola overview makes for modern materials.
Whatever you buy, ask what the warranty covers on the finish. Our warranty comparison shows how much it varies.
